BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2007) – Alvernia College and Gwynedd-Mercy played 110 minutes of soccer and all the scoring occurred in a 44 second span in a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
After a scoreless first half, Alvernia got the scoring started in the 58th minute when junior
David Schaeffer (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) finished a pass from Tim Sweeney (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) for his third goal of the season.
The Crusaders (5-10-2, 3-3-2 PAC) had little time to settle in and defend the lead as the Griffins(3-9-5, 0-4-3 PAC) burst down the field to knot the score. George Lane made a move around the defense near the left side end line and sent the ball into the middle of the box. Alvernia keeper
Richard Kessler (Reading, Pa./Reading) who finished with eight saves, got a hand on the ball to redirect it in front of the net, but the defense couldn't clear and Dennis Halverson banged home his fourth of the season in the 59th minute.
Alvernia went down a man in the 68th minute when
Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle) was sent off with a red card. The Griffins held the balance of chances for the rest of regulation, but both teams had chances to finish the game in the extra frames.
The hosts had a few prime opportunities. One in the first overtime when
Adam Lush (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) hit a volley just wide of the right post, and two in the second overtime with Schaeffer having the ball out front inside the box and again on a head ball off a set play.
Gwynedd-Mercy keeper Joe Schneider made 12 saves to earn the fifth tie of the year for the Griffins.
Alvernia will close the regular season at Penn State-Altoona on Monday and could make the PAC postseason with a bit of help.
