Alvernia Opens With Convincing Win

Light Scores Twice, Assists On A Third In 5-0 Win

Winchester, Va. (Sept. 1, 2007) – The final goal of the 2006 women's soccer season at Alvernia College ended a shutout streak of nearly 500 minutes for the Crusaders. The '07 squad immediately started another streak posting a 5-0 win over Shenandoah University in day one action of the Shenandoah Shootout Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Brandi Light (Myerstown, Pa./Tulpehocken), second in career goals and points at Alvernia, scored twice and assisted on another goal. Freshman Stephanie Loftus (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), one of nine first-year players on the Crusaders (1-0) roster, opened the scoring on Light's assist, and added a second goal early in the second half. Sophomore Jasmine Morales (Montville, Pa./Montville) tallied the final goal of the day midway through the second half.

Alvernia junior Danielle Fitzpatrick (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) earned the shutout playing all 90 minutes in net for the Crusaders.

Alvernia will play for its first ever tournament championship in women's soccer on Sunday when it plays at Trinity (D.C.) at 3:00 p.m.
