Alvernia Starts Modest Streak With 5-1 Win

Franks Scores Twice For Crusaders

Reaing, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2008) - Freshman forward Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) scored twice and Alvernia University (5-7-1) recorded its first back-to-back wins of the season with a 5-1 decision over Penn State-Berks (5-9) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Berks.

Franks opened the scoring unassisted in the 17th minute and tallied the game-winner assisted by James Mellon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) three minutes later.  Freshman Matthew Colombaro (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) handed out an assist on each of the Crusaders' next two goals, once in the 32nd minute and again in the 52nd minute.  Senior David Schaeffer (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) finished off a score on a direct kick feed from Rob Guth (Newton, N.J./Newton) with 20 minutes to go to close the scoring.

PSU-Berks scored its lone goal with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.  Alvernia used a pair of keepers in the win with senior Richard Kessler (Reading, Pa./Reading) making five saves in 76 minutes and Chris Young (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell Egan) stopping one shot in 14 minutes.

Alvernia will host Wilkes University in an important Freedom Conference game this Saturday as part of a women's and men's doubleheader.
