BOX SCORE
Reading, PA (Oct. 18, 2008) - Sophmore
Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) scored twice as Alvernia University (6-7-1, 3-1 Freedom) defeated Wilkes University (8-6-1, 4-1 Freedom) by a score of 3-2 this afternoon in Freedom Conference action at Sovereign Sports Park. This was the Crusaders' third straight win and Wilkes' first Freedom Conference loss.
Alvernia jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when junior forward
Adam Lush (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) was successful on a Penalty Kick that he earned. The 1-0 lead lasted until the 36th minute when Wilkes' sophomore
Doug Moore headed in a ball just past goalie
Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) off of a free kick. The 1-1 tie would last until halftime with Wilkes out shooting Alvernia by the slim margin of 5-4.
The Colonels from Wilkes didn't waste any time in the second half, putting the go-ahead goal into the net in the 52nd minute thanks to midfielder
Matt Sankey. Less than two minutes later the Crusaders would answer with the game-tying goal when Davidheiser hit an impossible shot from next to the sideline that somehow found it's way into the far left corner of the net.
The game went back-and-forth throughout the second half with Wilkes again out shooting Alvernia, this time 10-7. Davidheiser connected for his second goal of the day, this time the game winner in the 79th minute after he received a break-away pass from Lush. He managed to elude two defenders and calmly place the ball just over the goalie's reach. Alvernia would shut down Wilkes for the remainder of the game to hand them their first Freedom Conference loss.
The Crusaders will be back in action Oct. 22nd at 4:00pm when they travel to Eastern University for another conference match-up.
