Center Valley, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2008) - Three different players tallied a goal and an assist to lead Alvernia University (9-8, 3-3) to a 4-1 win over DeSales University (7-11, 1-6) Wednesday afternoon in Freedom Conference field hockey action at DeSales.
Junior
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and freshman
Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) both scored their team leading 11 goals of the season and added an assist each, and sophomore
Kaitlin Prutzman (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) scored a goal and an assist. Freshman
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored the other goal and
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) added the last assist.
Alvernia held an 11-7 advantage in shots in the first half, but neither team found the back of the net in the opening frame.
The guest Crusaders came back with a 9-2 advantage in second half shots and burried four chances to hold onto the fifth and final playoff spot in the conference tournament which begins on Monday with the fifth seed traveling to #4. Alvernia can lock up a playoff spot with a win tomorrow at FDU and would need a win Saturday against Wilkes and help to jump King's for fourth place.
Prutzman opened the scoring assisted by Lynch in the 45th minute but the Bulldogs came back to tie the score four minutes later. Eby gave the Crusaders the lead seven seconds after the restart assisted by Landis and Eby set up Lynch two minutes later for the insurance goal.
Rutt scored her second goal in as many games in the 63rd minute assisted by Prutzman.

Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) finished with five saves for the Crusaders.
Alvernia will play at FDU-Florham Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
