Gabrielle Albanesius (Philadelphia, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) racked up a career-high 17 kills for Alvernia University (5-16, 1-7) in a 3-2 loss to Wilkes University (11-19, 5-3) Wednesday evening in Freedom Conference women's volleyball action at Wilkes.
Alvernia won the first set 26-24 and after Wilkes evened the match with a win in the second set. The Crusaders earned another two-point win, 25-23 in the third set to pull within one set of upsetting a Wilkes team looking to solidify its playoff position.
For the second time on the evening, 25 points wasn't enough to win a set as Wilkes needed extra time to once again even the match with a 31-29 win, and the Colonels kept the momentum for a 15-13 win in the deciding set.
Albanesius scored 17 kils on 57 attacks and was one of five Crusaders to reach double figures in digs with 11.
Laura Hetke (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and
Alyssa Soltis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) both reached double figures in kills with 13. Soltis and senior
Lauren Crimi (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) had a team-best five aces and Crimi led the team with 26 digs. Younger sister
Leah Crimi (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) finished with 25 digs and 38 assists. Freshman
Alicia Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax Area) was the final player to reach double figures in digs with 11.
