Alvernia Wins Conference Opener Over Delaware Valley

Lynch Nets A Pair In The First Half

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 4, 2008) - Freshman Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) set up junior Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine Heights) for two virtually identical goals in the first half, but Alvernia University (6-4, 1-0) needed a second half penalty stroke from sophomore Ashley Tatangelo (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) for a 3-2 win over Delaware Valley College (8-4, 0-2) in Freedom Conference field hockey action at Alvernia.

Delaware Valley held possession for the opening 10 minutes of play, and just as the clock rolled past the midway point of the first half, Eby carried the ball into the circle on the left side and drilled a pass in front of the cage that Lynch redirected inside the far post for her sixth goal of the season.

Six minutes later the duo hooked up again on a very similar play this time with Lynch taking a brief moment to collect the ball before putting the Crusaders up 2-0.  Alvernia senior Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) needed just one save in the first half to help the hosts take the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

DVC cut the deficit in half 13 minutes into the second half when Stephanie Dec four Danielle Heyne open on the back post for her fifth goal of the season.  Alvernia countered 10 minutes for the much needed insurance goal when Tatangelo burried a penalty shot for a 3-1 lead.

The Aggies made it interesting when Michelle Cernobyl scored her 17th goal of the season with just over 90 seconds remaining.

Hoffman finished with two saves on the day while counterpart Jackie Deschesnes recorded three saves for the Aggies.

Alvernia will travel to Juniata on Thursday for a non-conference match with the Eagles.
