Crusaders Handle PSU-Berks

Alvernia Easily Defeats Cross-Town Rival 5-0

BOX SCORE

Reading, PA (Oct. 6, 2008) -  Freshman Katie Wimberg (Galloway, NJ/Sacred Heart) scored twice and assisted on a third goal as Alvernia University defeated Penn State-Berks this afternoon 5-0 in non-conference action at Sovereign Bank Sports Park.  The win brings Alvernia back to .500 on the season (6-6), while PSU-Berks drops to 0-8-1.

Wimberg found the back of the net less than five minutes into the game for her third goal of the season after she earned the ball off a long punt from goalie Kirsten Kelley (Kirkwood, PA/Bishop Shanahan) and quickly dribbled through the PSU-Berks defenders before firing off a shot into the right of the net.  In the 33rd minute Wimberg gave Alvernia the 2-0 lead thanks to a cross from Kristen Mantle (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon).  The Crusaders soon went up 3-0 after freshman Amy Mesce (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) lofted a ball from 25 yards out that slipped into the net just under the cross bar.  In the 39th minute Alvernia benefitted from a PSU-Berks goalie error and took the 4-0 lead on an own goal from Berks.

The second half saw Alvernia fire off 11 shots, including one from Mantle after a cross from Wimberg to put Alvernia up 5-0.  This was Mantle's first goal of the season as she spends most of her time in net.  The Crusaders out shot PSU-Berks 30-6 and held the decisive edge in corners 11-3.

Alvernia will return to action Oct. 11th when they take on DeSales at home at 4:00 pm in their third Freedom Conference game of the season.
