BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2008) - It's not the home playoff game that people were hoping for, but with a 2-0 loss to Manhattanville (11-7-1, 5-3) Saturday afternoon, Alvernia University (8-9-1, 5-3) will finish fourth in the Freedom Conference Men's Soccer standings and host #5 Eastern University in the play-in game on Tuesday.
Both teams played to a 0-0 tie after the opening half. Manhattanville had a 12-4 lead in shots in the first half, but both teams only put one shot on goal and both goalies were up to the task.
Manhattanville broke through just three minute after the halftime break when a set play from near the left corner led to the opening goal. The initial pass came across to the far post and was headed back to the opposite side where
Emil Sjoberg knocked home his second goal of the season.
Five minutes later the Valiants pushed the lead to 2-0 when
Sebastian Chica scored his ninth goal of the year on a header.
Both goalies finished with one save and Manhattanville finished with a 17-6 lead in shots and an 11-4 advantage in corners.
The winner of Tuesday's play-in game will travel to top-seeded Misericordia for a semifinal game on Thursday. Manhattanville, the third seed, will travel to #2 Wilkes for a semifinal game on Thursday.
