BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2008) - Fifth-seeded Eastern University (11-7-1) scored on a direct kick 51 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 win over #4 Alvernia University (9-9-1) Tuesday afternoon in the Freedom Conference Men's Soccer quarterfinal at Sovereign Bank Sports Park.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead on when
Terry Fry scored his 14th goal of the season in the 14th minute. Senior goalie
Michael Dorsch played a long ball out of the box to start a quick counterattack and Fry collected the ball on a bounce, took a touch and drove the shot inside the far post.
Both teams had a handful of chances for the next goal, with Alvernia creating perhaps their best chance all day with under four minutes left to play. Alvernia had a ball bounce to the foot of freshman Dominic Montone (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) off a free kick, but Dorsch swallowed up one of his eight saves to maintain the lead.
Shortly thereafter Alvernia sophomore
Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was taken down in the box and the Crusaders earned the penalty kick. Davidheiser, who was slow to get up after the play, deferred to Rutherford who ripped the ball past Dorsch to knot the game at 1-1 with just under two minutes to play.
Eastern won the toss for the overtime kick and moved the ball down to the top of the Crusaders' box where the hosts were whistled for a foul. Fry set up the ensuing free kick about 25 yards out on the right side and drove a shot past the wall and a diving
Richard Kessler (Reading, Pa./Reading) for the game-winner.
The Eagles will travel to top-seeded Misericordia University for a semifinal match-up on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Third-seeded Manhattanville College will travel to #2 Wilkes in the other semifinal. The Freedom Conference Men's Soccer Championship will conclude on Saturday.
