Big Inning Costly Against Rutgers

DeBarberie Picks Up Two More Hits

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 14, 2008) – Alvernia College was cruising with a 4-1 lead until Rutgers-Newark plated six runs in the seventh inning to steal a non-conference baseball game by an 8-6 final Monday afternoon at Alvernia.

Alvernia sophomore Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Vallley) gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and left after putting two men on to start the seventh, but the Scarlet Raptors got to the bullpen for four hits, a walk, and two hit batsmen in the seventh to push across six runs and take a 7-4 lead.

Alvernia came right back with a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh scoring once on a James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) double and again on a Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) sac fly, but they stranded two runners at second base with a chance to tie the game.

DeBarberie, the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference player of the week, finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and Corey Berghardt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) picked up two hits in four at-bats.

Alvernia will continue the non-conference schedule at Elizabethtown on Tuesday.
