Alvernia Splits A Pair At Neumann

Aston, Pa. (Apr. 7, 2008) – Alvernia College split a doubleheader with Neumann College Monday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action losing the first game 3-2 before striking back with a 17-2 win in game two.

Alvernia put the first run of the day on the board in the top of the first when Brendan Barry (Franklin Square, Pa./St. Mary's) doubled with one out and scored on a Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) single. Freshman Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) held the Knights off the board for five innings, but the hosts struck for three runs in the home half of the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Marco Menna (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) led off the top of the seventh with a single and the Crusaders loaded the bases with no one out. Tim Carroll (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell Egan) brought home a run with a grounder, but the Knights were able to end the game with a groundball double play.

Alvernia set the tone in game two with six runs in the top of the first, the big blow a bases-clearing double off the bat of freshman Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata). The Crusaders added nine more runs in the fifth this time with freshman Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) providing the bases-clearing double.

Freshman Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) earned the win going six innings and allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.

Alvernia will travel to Albright College for a non-conference match up with the Lions on Tuesday.
