Reading, PA (Sept. 10, 2008) - The Crusaders surrendered the game-tying goal to Immaculata University (0-2-2) in the 77th minute before eventually settling for the 1-1 tie in their home-opener this afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field. WIth the loss Alvernia now sits at 1-3-1.
The first half was a scoreless affair for both teams with Alvernia narrowly outshooting the Mighty Macs 8-7. Immaculata earned two penatly corners to Alvernia's one, but neither team was able to find the back of the net for 45 minutes, with the Crusaders relying on three saves from goalie Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) to preserve the scoreless tie. The Mighty Macs were mere inches from taking the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when Abdulla Konneh lofted a shot that banged off the crossbar before being cleared.
The Crusaders took the lead in the 55th minute when sophomore Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) dribbled up the heart of the field on a breakaway and was able to draw the goalie out before depositing the ball in the far right corner for his second goal of the season.
Alvernia's 1-0 lead would remain until the 77th minute when Mighty Mac Konneh sought revenge on his crossbar rejection and drilled a shot past a diving Kessler to tie the game at one.
Both of the overtime's were fruitless as each team only needed a save a piece from their goalies to preserve the 1-1 tie. Alvernia fired off three shots in the overtimes, and Immaculata managed five of their own.
The Crusaders will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Elizabethtown College for a 7:00 pm game.
