Reading, PA (Sept. 4, 2008) – The Crusader field hockey team fell to #5 Lebanon Valley College this afternoon in non-conference action at Alvernia College by a score of 5-0. With the loss, Alvernia falls to 1-2 on the young season and the Dutchmen from Lebanon Valley improve to 2-0. Alvernia is now 1-6 lifetime against the perennial field hockey powerhouse from LVC.
The Crusaders and Dutchmen were even through the first ten minutes of the game, with both teams firing off only one shot on goal. That quickly changed after the Dutchmen capitalized on one of their seven first half corners and connected for the first goal of the game at 22:48. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Seidenstricker recovered the rebound off the corner play and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Lebanon Valley quickly added another goal less than a minute later when senior forward Alex Wolfe earned the loose ball in the circle and popped it over the Crusader goalie's stick for her second goal of the season to give the Dutchmen the quick 2-0 lead at 21:51.
The Dutchmen's third and fourth goal both came off of corner plays with the third goal coming from senior Avery Carter who received the perfect corner pass-in from Shelly Lobach. Their fourth goal of their half was off the stick of Danielle Blase who was assisted by Jocelyn Novak after Lebanon-Valley battled to bring the ball back into the circle after a errant corner pass.
Alvernia earned four corners to start the second half and fired off four quick shots but were unable to find the back of the cage thanks to the Dutchmen's stingy defense. The Crusaders continued their strong offensive attack through the second half outshooting Lebanon-Valley eight to seven, and holding the advantage in penalty corners seven to three but were simply unable to penetrate the Dutchmen defense.
Lebanon Valley added their fifth goal of the game in the 61st minute when Novak received the pass from Nikki Bomberger and redirected it past the goalie.
Junior Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) led the Crusader offensive attack with six shots, four of which were on goal.
The Crusaders will face off with another non-conference rival, Susquehanna University this Sat. Sept. 6th at 1:00 pm.
