Crusaders Tally Three Goals In 18 Minutes

BOX SCORE

Chester, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2009) - Alvernia University (3-12, 0-3) started to dig out of a 4-0 hole scoring three times in the final 20 minutes, but Widener University (11-2-2, 2-1) had enough to hold off the Crusaders, including a penalty kick in the final seconds, for a 6-3 win Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action at Widener.

The Pride scored twice in the last 10 minutes of the opening half getting both from Brittany Balentine, who managed a hat trick on the evening, and took a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.

The hosts doubled their lead with a pair of goals in a three minute span early in the second half.

Alvernia sophomore Amy Mesce (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) broke through for the Crusaders with her fifth of the season as the clock ticked up 20 minutes to play.  She was setup on a corner play by junior forward Felicia Sippel (Cinnaminson, N.J./St. Hubert)

The Pride got the second of the night from Brittany Harvis just over a minute later, but the Crusaders kept knocking with Erin Stone (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) scoring her first of the year from Lindsay Neubauer (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) in the 78th minute and Jasmine Morales (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) netting her second of the season on another corner play again setup by Sippel.

Balentine finished off the scoring with 14 seconds left on a penalty kick.

Alvernia junior Kirsten Kelley (Kirkwood, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) made eight saves in net.

The Crusaders host Lycoming College this Saturday as part of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader.
