Reading, Pa. (October 17, 2009) - The Crusader Men's Soccer team earned their first Commonwealth Conference win thanks to a 2-1 double overtime victory over visiting Lycoming College (10-5-1, 0-3-1 Commonwealth) this afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field as a part of Alvernia's Homecoming weekend. With the win Alvernia improves to 4-9 on the season and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Conference.
The Crusaders got on the board early thanks to a Lycoming foul that resulted in a penalty kick. Junior
Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) connected for a successful penalty kick in the second minute of the game to give Alvernia the very early 1-0 lead. The Crusaders would hang on to the 1-0 lead through the first half despite Lycoming's seven shots and four corner kicks. Crusader goalie
Drew Gilbert (Reading, Pa./Amtietam) would need five saves in the first half to preserve the shut out.
Lycoming would battle back hard in the second half firing off 12 shots to Alvernia's one. They managed to tie the game early in the second half with Jimmy Deasel's eigth goal of the season in the 53rd minute. The game would remind knotted at one through regulation and Gilbert would need seven more saves in the second half to keep the game tied.
The Crusaders would manage just one shot in both overtimes but that would be all that was needed.
Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) served in a pass from the side to
Adam Lush (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) that Lush would control and manage to toe-touch just over the goalie's reach for the game-winner in the 113th minute. This was Lush's team-leading fifth goal of the season and his first game-winner.
Alvernia will look to put together back-to-back wins for the second time this season when they take on Albright College at home on Wednesday October 21st at 7:00 pm.
