Reading, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2009) - Albright College (6-8-2, 1-3) scored on a free kick nearly 15 minutes into the second half for the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (4-10, 1-3) Wednesday night in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
The first time the two programs met in a conference game went scoreless through the first half. Both teams totaled five shots each over the first 45 minutes, but neither found the back of the net.
Alvernia's best chance perhaps coming off the right foot of sophomore James Mellon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) whose curling shot from the top of the box narrowly missed the far post top corner.
Sophomore striker
Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) had a good chance early in the second half, but his shot ripped high and over the bar.
The Lions earned a free kick about 30 yards out in front of
Drew Gilbert's (Reading, Pa./Antietam) net and sophomore
Mark Yost stepped into it with a strong left foot deflecting it off the wall and passed Gilbert for the only goal of the game.
Franks had a chance later in the half when he was sent in alone, but an aggressive
Billy Howard met him midway into the box and knocked the ball harmlessly wide of the net.
Alvernia continued to press getting five corner kicks in the final 30 minutes, but the Crusaders couldn't connect on the equalizer and will now travel to Messiah College for an afternoon tilt with the Falcons this Saturday.
