Reading, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2009) - Alvernia University (3-5, 0-1) skimmed a perfectly placed header into the side netting in the 60th minute, but it was the only tally of the day for the Crusaders in a 2-1 loss to Elizabethtown College (9-1, 1-0) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Etown held the advantage in possession and after a scoreless first half that featured two of Alvernia sophomore
Drew Gilbert's (Reading, Pa./Antietam) four saves, the Blue Jays netted their first goal when
Ross Withrow cleaned up a free ball in front of Gilbert four minutes into the second half.
Alvernia got the equalizer just over 10 minutes later when it earned a free kick about 30 yards out in front of the Etown net. Freshman defender
Lucas Blair (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) stung a low serve into the box and Montone redirected it just above the penalty stripe to knot the score at 1-1.
Etown needed little time to score the go ahead goal. This time it was Withrow on the service end ripping a shot from the left side that Gilbert knocked down. The Alvernia keeper was able to get one swat at the rebound, but it found the feet of
Geoff Cochrane who's point blank shot caromed off Gilbert and into the back corner.
Benjamin Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) played the last 30 minutes in net for Alvernia and recorded one save.
Alvernia returns to action Monday hosting Richard Stockton before five straight conference games.
