Lindsey Neubauer (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) played in net for the first time since ninth grade and nearly came away with a win, but Drew University (2-1-1) scored with under 15 minutes to go for a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon in day one action of the Drew Fall Classic Women's Soccer Tournament.
Neubauer, who stopped seven in her debut, and the Crusaders will face Arcadia University in Sunday's consolation game.
The stats after the first half were fairly even, as was the score, which was knotted at 0-0 at halftime. Drew held a 6-4 edge in shots, but Neubauer saved all three that were on net.
The first two goals came early in the second half with Drew scoring just three minutes after the restart and Alvernia answering on
Kate McCaffrey's (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) first of the season 48 seconds later.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until Drew's
Emily Weida tallied the game-winner in the 78th minute.
Drew rattled off a dozen shots in the second half and held an 18-8 lead for the game.
Drew faces Richard Stockton in the championship game on Sunday after topping Arcadia in penalty kicks.
