Scranton Holds Off Alvernia, 2-1

Scranton, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2009) - The University of Scranton (5-1) scored all it needed in the first 17 minutes of play and held off Alvernia for a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Scranton.

The Royals got on the board in the third minute, but Alvernia knotted the score at 1-1 in the 10th minute on sophomore Dominic Montone's (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) first goal of the season.  Scranton kept the early pace going with its second goal seven minutes later and the score remained 2-1 through the final horn.

Alvernia sophomore Drew Gilbert (Reading, Pa./Antietam) made eight saves in net for the Crusaders.  His counterpart, Brandon Dombrowski, stopped five for the Royals and was aided by one team save.

Alvernia put seven shots on net to 10 for the Royals.  Alvernia returns home to host Ursinus College next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
