Reading, Pa. (September 23, 2009) - The Crusader Men's Soccer team improved their record to 3-4 with a 3-1 win over Ursinus College this afternoon in non-conference action at Schlager Memorial Field on Alvernia's campus.  Alvernia got three goals from three different players, including two goals in the first ten minutes of play.  With the loss Ursinus falls to 1-4-1.

The visiting Bears took advantage of some slow-starting Crusader defense and netted the first goal of the game a mere 53 seconds after the starting whistle.  Jean Carlo Cordova managed to elude Alvernia's defense with some crafty footwork and fired a shot past diving goalie Drew Gilbert (Reading, Pa./Antietam).

The Crusaders quickly rallied and evened the score in the 4th minute of play thanks to a brilliant pass from freshman Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) that found fellow freshman Brice Stine (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) open in front of the net.  Stine would take advantage and connect for his second goal of the season to tie the game.

The early scoring action continued as Alvernia would take the 2-1 lead in the ninth minute.  Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) served a tricky cross to Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) who would bring it down and put it in the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give Alvernia the 2-1 lead at 9:06.

The Crusaders held the slight edge in shots 9-6, while Ursinus outnumbered Alvernia in corner kicks 8-3.  Tonight's game was an exciting match up with 24 fouls being called and five yellow cards being issued.

Alvernia will look to string together back-to-back wins when they travel to DeSales University for a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm.
