BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (September 28, 2009) - The Crusader Women's soccer team fell to visiting Elizabethtown College in their Commonwealth Conference opener by a score of 0-1 in double overtime this afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field. With the loss Alvernia falls to 2-9, 0-1 Commonwealth while Elizabethtown improves to 3-5, 1-0 Commonwealth.
Elizabethtown tallied 24 shots on the afternoon, including 13 in the second half. Crusader goalie
Kirsten Kelley (Kirkwood, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) managed to save all nine shots on goal throughout regulation and the first overtime. Elizabethtown would also threaten with 13 corner kicks, but again the Crusader defense would stand strong and deny the Blue Jays a goal.
Alvernia managed just four shots on the day and two corner kicks, with perhaps their best chance to score coming off an indirect kick in the 79th minute that saw sophomore
Amy Mesce (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) strike a shot just wide left of the goal.
The game would conclude in the 114th minute when Elizabethtown managed to loft a cross into the box that was eventually headed into their own net by the Crusaders.
Alvernia will return to action Monday October 5th when they host PSU-Berks in non-conference action at 4:00pm.
