Crusaders Off In 6-0 Loss to Dickinson

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2009) - The Alvernia University (1-2) women's soccer team just looked sluggish and got few breaks to get itself out of the funk in a 6-0 loss to Dickinson College (3-0) Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the second annual Crusader Cup Tournament.

Dickinson applied the early pressure and broke through in the 16th minute on a goal from Genevieve Olson.  Ten minutes later back-to-back goals from Hannah Richardson put the Red Devils up 3-0 and with the game barely 30 minutes old the Crusader defense misdirected a clear into the back of its own net for a 4-0 gap.

Dickinson scored once more in the opening half taking a 5-0 lead into the break.

The second half featured a bit less offensive action with Dickinson having tallied 14 of its 23 shots before the break, but the Devils did punch a final one home again off a rebound for the 6-0 final, the same total they bettered Rutgers-Camden by in Friday's tournament opener.

Kim Callaghan finished with two goals and an assist and represented Dickinson on the All-Tournament Team.  Ashley and Marissa Kunkle joined Callaghan in the award as did Olson, the Tournament MVP.

Alvernia put three players on the list.  Amy Mesce (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley), who tallied twice in Friday's win over Gwynedd-Mercy, Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), and junior goalie Kirsten Kelley (Kirkwood, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) who played better than six goals would indicate.

Alvernia will continue the mini Centennial Conference tour traveling to Franklin & Marshall next Wednesday.
