Alvernia Tops Frostburg In Cabrini Opener

Radnor, Pa. (Sept. 4, 2009) - Sophomore Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) finished an assist from Brice Stine (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) in the 22nd minute and Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) buried a free kick midway through the second half to lead Alvernia University (2-0) to a 2-0 win over Frostburg State (1-1) Friday afternoon in day one action at the Cabrini Men's Soccer Festival.

Stine's throw in found Franks who finished his first goal of the season.  Both teams rattled off seven shots in the opening half, but it was the Crusaders who took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The game remained 1-0 until the 71st minute when Alvernia earned a free kick 25 yards out.  Martyn laid into it with the left foot and found the upper corner to give the Crusaders the 2-0 lead.

Sophomore goalie Drew Gilbert (Reading, Pa./Antietam) made six saves to record the second straight shutout for the Crusaders who will face host Cabrini in the championship game on Saturday.
