BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2010) - Junior goalie
Abby Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) had 24 saves, including 12 in the second half, but it was not enough as #9 Eastern University (7-1) snuck in the game-winner over Alvernia (4-3) in the with less than eight minutes remaining in the second overtime to defeat the Crusaders 2-1.
In a game that was postponed from yesterday due to lightning after just five minutes of play, Alvernia found the back of the net first as
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) absolutely drilled a shot lower right off of a corner pass from
Chelsea Wanamaker (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley) in the 33rd minute. The Crusaders would hold onto the 1-0 lead into halftime despite six shots and six corners from the Eagles.
Alvernia's 1-0 lead stood until the 57th minute that Eastern knotted the score at one thanks to Kim Campbell's fourth goal of the season. The Eagles bombarded Alvernia with offense through the rest of the game - outshooting the Crusaders 18-1 in the second half and earning 16 corners to Alvernia's 2. However, the solid combination of Crusader defense and 12 second half saves from Eby preserved the tie.
The first overtime saw Eastern fire off seven shots and Eby come up with five saves, while the Crusaders managed just one threat on their end. In the 82nd minute the game appeared to tilt in Eastern's favor as they were awarded a penalty stroke. The stroke missed wide and the tie went into the second overtime.
The Crusaders again relied on their offense to fend off six shots and five corners from the Eagles and Samantha Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) came up big with a defensive save off the goal line in the 92 minute. But it was just a minute later that Yvonne Herbster snuck in the game-winner to give Eastern their seventh win of the season.
Alvernia returns to action this Saturday when they open Commonwealth Conference play by hosting Arcadia at 1:00pm.
