Reading, Pa. (Sept. 4, 2010) - Freshman defender Katelyn Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) scored the first goal of her career from 30 yards out late in the first half and it held in a 1-0 victory for Alvernia University Saturday afternoon in game two of the fourth annual Crusader Cup Women's Soccer Tournament.
Senior goalie Kirsten Kelley (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) pitched her fifth career shutout needing just a pair of saves in the last 10 minutes to do it.
Senior Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) sent a free kick into the box from below the 18 with about 10 minutes left in the first half, and after the Griffins defense cleared the initial threat, Gill settled the clear and knocked it back in perfect location to elude Griffin netminder Kristie Pollock.
Alvernia finished with an 8-2 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Pollock ended with four saves.
The is the second straight year Alvernia has earned a one-goal decision over Gwynedd-Mercy in Crusader Cup action. The Crusaders advanced a year ago with a 2-1 win in overtime.
The Crusaders face Penn State-Altoona at noon on Sunday and the Crusader Cup closes with Gwynedd-Mercy facing Dickinson at 2:30 p.m. Altoona and Dickinson played to a 0-0 tie earlier Saturday.
