Reading, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2010) - Susquehanna University (2-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take the championship game of the Crusader Cup Tournament by a score of 2-1 this evening at Schlager Memorial Field.
Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) netted the first goal of the game for Alvernia (1-1-1) just 18 minutes in, but Alvernia was unable to hold on for the victory.
The first half began with some prompt back and forth action and the Crusaders from Susquehanna and the Crusaders from Alvernia matched each other shot for shot for the first 15 minutes. Alvernia broke the scoreless tie with a rocket from Davidheiser that was drilled at the goalkeeper and managed to sneak through to put Alvernia up 1-0. Alvernia was comfortably riding their 1-0 lead into halftime with goalkeeper Benjamin Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) tallying four saves to keep Susquehanna scoreless until the 44th minute. A foul in the box resulted in a successful penalty kick for Susquehanna to tie the game just before the half.
The 1-1 tie did not last for long as
Austin Gordon from Susquehanna avoided Alvernia's defense up the left side of the field, and fired a shot to the near post that curled just inside to give Susquehanna the 2-1 lead. Alvernia managed to counter with three shots in the second half but it wasn't enough as the 2-1 score stood until the 90th minute.
Alvernia was out shot 13-7, but held the 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Your Crusaders will return to action when they face Gwynedd-Mercy at the Haverford Tournament on Sept. 11th at 12:00pm.
