Alvernia Rallies For Win Over Blue Jays

Crusaders Overcome Early Deficit For 2-1 Win

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2011) - Alvernia (10-2-1, 3-0 Comm.) got a late game-winner from junior Emir Guerrero (Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) as they rallied for a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Elizabethtown (6-5, 1-2 Comm.) this evening in Commonwealth Conference action at Schlager Memorial Field on Alvernia's campus.  This was Alvernia's first program win over the Blue Jays, bringing their series record to with Elizabethtown to 1-6. 

Despite Alvernia outshooting the Blue Jays 4-3 and holding the 2-1 corner kick advantage in the first half, it was Elizabethtown that struck first.  Cameron Wyllie gave the Blue Jays the 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when he slotted one in just past the Crusader goalie off of pass from Bryan Strode that initiated off a corner kick. 

The second half was all Alvernia as the Crusaders outshot the Blue Jays 10-2 and earned seven corner kicks to Elizabethtown's one.  Senior Kyle Mellon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) netted the equalizer in the 58th minute, he was assisted by both Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and Guerrero.  The game-tying goal was produced off a corner kick that got knocked around in the box with Mellon eventually finding the back of the net.

The Crusader's managed the game-winner in the 72nd minute thanks to a well-placed cross from Nate Swarr (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) and a header from Guerrero that sailed in just past the Blue Jay goalkeeper.

Alvernia, who is currently ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic Regiona in the latest NSCAA regional ranking returns to action on Oct. 15th when they host Albright College on homecoming at 4:00pm.
