BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2011) - Alvernia sophomore Hillary Prozillo (Swedesboro, N.J./Bishop Eustace) scored her first goal of the season late in the first half and Alvernia University (7-5, 2-1) got a fortuitus bounce off an Elizabethtown (6-5-1, 0-3) defender late in the second half for a 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Fellow reserve
Laura Mauroschadt (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) carried the ball deep near the right endline in the final minutes of the opening half and sent a cross to Prozillo who took a touch to collect the ball and deposited it past Etown keeper Jess Manchak to tie the score at 1-all.
"We made a few halftime adjustments focused on playing with more intensity and forcing the ball into their zone," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz after the win. "With that pressure on their back line we were able to shut down the Blue Jay offense holding them to just three shots in the second half."
The score remained level until the last 10 minutes of the game when Alvernia sophomore
Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) served a ball--again from the right side--into the box. Alvernia senior
Amy Mesce (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) and an Etown defender both ran onto the ball which carromed off the leg of the defender and inside the near post to put the Crusaders up 2-1.
Alvernia was able to play an aggressive defense for the final 10 minutes and ran out the clock despite one dangerous corner kick for the Jays late in the game.
The Crusaders host crosstown and conference rival Albright College on Saturday for a women's and men's doubleheader starting at 1:00.
