Chester, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2011) - Alvernia University (7-6-1, 2-2-1) scored an early goal in each half, but Widener University (7-5-1, 2-2) scored three straight for a 3-2 win Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action at Widener.
The Crusaders were on the board before the game was a minute old.
Kristen Eckert (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) struck the rebound of a
Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) under the crossbar for the opening goal at the 59 second mark, and
Karli Nestor (Bally, Pa./Boyertown) finished a feed from
Rachel Gimber (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) less than five minutes into the second half for a 2-0 lead.
The Pride scored on a point blank shot in the 59th minute then on a header in the 73rd minute and went ahead for good on a rebound goal in the 79th minute.
Alvernia had one final chance to level the score but Eckert's header with 90 seconds to go was wide of the mark.
Jamie Dearie (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond) made three saves in net for the Crusaders. Her counterpart Vanessa Hejnas stopped five for the Pride.
Alvernia will head to Penn State-Berks for a non-conference game on Thursday.
