David McEwen (Cambridge, England/Upper Merion) scored on a rebound with less than 20 seconds left in the first overtime to give Alvernia University (12-2-1, 5-0-0) a 1-0 win over Widener University (3-10-2, 0-5-0) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Widener.
The win establishes a new single season record for wins at Alvernia surpassing the 2006 team's 11 wins. It's just the second time in the 17-year history of the program that a team has put together double-digit wins in a season. The 2006 team advanced to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference final and the Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinal.
Junior goalie
Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land), the three-time defending Commonwealth Defender of the Week, needed just two saves to record his seventh shutout of the season.
Alvernia ripped off 14 shots in regulation, but Widener goalie Ryan Frantz made the five saves necessary to force overtime. The Crusaders scored on their third shot of the extra frame. After earning a corner kick in the final minute of the first overtime, Alvernia got the ball to
Josh Fretz (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) ripped a shot off the crossbar that carromed out to McEwen. McEwen had time to settle the ball and score the winner in traffic--his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Alvernia will continue the conference schedule this Saturday with a trip to #1-ranked Messiah College for part of a tripleheader with field hockey at 1:00 pm, women's soccer at 5:00 p.m., and the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
