Reading, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2011) - A pair of freshman--
David McEwen (Flourtown, Pa./Upper Merion) and
Giuliano Caloiero (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley)--netted two goals apiece in their college debuts and junior keeper
Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) stoned a penalty kick attempt as Alvernia Univeristy (1-0) cruised to a 7-0 victory over Penn State-Berks (0-1) Thursday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field.
The Crusaders found the finishing a little tough in the early stages before another freshman,
Joe Raymond (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) burried a nice setup from Caloiero in the 22nd minute. McEwen's first game five mintues later with the Lions' keeper mishandled a clear and McEwen calmly floated a shot from the top of the box into the empty net.
The Crusaders sat on a 2-0 lead at halftime, but needed little time in the second half to secure the win. Caloiero scored back-to-back in the 49th and 52nd minutes,
Eric Franks (Reading, Pa./Exeter) slammed home a penalty kick in the 58th minute, and
EJ Logan (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tacked on another goal a minute later.
McEwen's second closed the scoring in the 88th minute.
Diller went 58 minutes without allowing a goal and freshman
Matt Wells (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) finished up the last 30 minutes.
Alvernia will travel to Manhattanville--a 7-0 winner in its own opener--for the first of a two-game road trip that includes a stop at Gwynedd-Mercy next Wednesday.
