Crusaders Defeat Lancaster Bible To Open Season

Reading, Pa. (Sept.1, 2011) – Junior Karli Nestor (Bally, Pa./Boyertown) scored the lone goal of the game with 15 minutes remaining as Alvernia (1-0) defeated visiting Lancaster Bible College (0-1) this evening in non-conference action at Schlager Memorial Field.  With the victory, the Crusader Women's Soccer team gave Alvernia Athletics a perfect 4-0 record on the opening day of the season with Field Hockey, Men's Soccer and Volleyball also earning wins.

The first half was a fairly even affair with the Crusaders managing five shots and just one corner, and the Chargers from Lancaster Bible firing off three shots and earning two corners.

The Crusaders held the definite advantage in the second half as they peppered the Chargers goalie with 11 shots and four corner kicks.  Junior Karli Nestor (Bally, Pa./Boyertown) finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 74th minute, a lead that Alvernia would not relinquish.

Goalkeeper Colleen Maher (Wall, NJ/Wall Township) needed three saves to post her first shut-out of the 2011 season.
Alvernia returns to action on Sept. 3rd when they host PSU-Altoona in the second game of the Crusader Cup Tournament at Alvernia at 2:00pm.
