Gill's Winner Carries Alvernia Past Eastern Mennonite

Maher Pitches Third Shutout

Fredrickburg, Va. (Sept. 10, 2011) - Sophomore Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) scored on unassisted goal on a strike from 25 yards out in the 26th minute and classmate Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) needed just a pair of saves to lead Alvernia University (3-1) to a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite University (0-3) Saturday afternoon at the Mary Washington College Women's Soccer Classic.

"We were very solid in our back four," said Alvernia head coach Bill Bonewitz after his team posted their third shutout win of the season.  "The back line kept Eastern Mennonite's pressure from reaching Colleen.  Both shots they had were from 25-plus yards out."

Maher made both saves in the first half and EMU was held without a shot in the second half.  The Crusaders found their target only four times on 10 shots during the game with sophomore reserve Hillary Prozzillo (Swedesboro, N.J./Bishop Eustace) accounting for half of that total.

"We've been moving the ball well," continued Bonewitz, "we just need to finish.  But again, if we win I don't care if it is 1-0."

All three of the Crusaders' wins this season have indeed been by that final.  The only loss was a 2-0 setback to Penn State-Altoona last weekend.

The Crusaders will face host Mary Washington Sunday afternoon at 3:00.
