Fredericksburg, Va. (Sept. 11, 2011) - Undefeated Mary Washington (4-0) scored once early and added second half insurance in a 2-0 win over Alvernia University (3-2) Sunday afternoon in day two action of the Mary Washington Women's Soccer Classic at Battleground Field.
"We made two mistakes and they capitalized on both of them," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz. "That is what's going to happen at this level."
The first Mary Washington goal came just under three minutes into the game on a strike from Excy Herrera. They went up a pair in the 64th minute on a goal from Kelsey Carter.
"It was a solid team effort today," continued Bonewitz. "We showed heart with no quit from beginning to end against a very good team."
The Crusaders had opportunities generating 10 shots, but couldn't beat Tina Brehm who made four saves to record the shutout. All five Alvernia games this season have ended in shutout with the Crusaders 3-0 in 1-0 games with a pair of 2-0 losses.
Sophomore keeper
Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) made nine saves in net for the Crusaders. Mary Washington finished with a 24-10 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners.
