Crusaders Fall To FDU-Florham

Alvernia Outshoots Devils, But Falls 1-2

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 20, 2011) - Despite outshooting the visiting Devils (2-6) from FDU-Florham 16-5, and earning seven corner kicks to FDU's one, Alvernia (4-3) fell this evening in non-conference action at Schlager Memorial Field by a score of 1-2.  A successful penalty kick from senior Amy Mesce (PIttstown, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) was Alvernia's lone tally of the night.

The Devil's took the 1-0 lead in the 31st minute of play as Kim Overland was in the right place at the right time and the ball deflected off of her and into the net after banging off the crossbar and a Crusader defender.  This was Overland's first goal of the season.  FDU added to their lead just before halftime as Michelle Hickey connected for her second goal of the season thanks to a long, strong shot from well outside the box that crossed from left to right--well out of reach of Alvernia goalkeeper Jamie Dearie (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame)

The Crusaders got one back in the 79th minute with a penalty kick from Mesce that was aimed perfectly lower left.  This would be all Alvernia could muster despite their 16 shots and seven corners.

Alvernia will return to action on Thurs. Sept. 22nd when they travel to Eastern University for a non-conference game at 4:00pm.
