Alvernia Earn Conference Win Over Arcadia

Newman Kills 11 To Pace Crusaders

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2011) - Alvernia University (6-6, 1-2) got a match-high 11 kills from Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and picked up its first conference win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Arcadia University (2-7, 0-3) Wednesday evening in a Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball match at the Physical Education Center.

The Crusaders fell behind early in the opening set with the Knights rattling off four points on their first serve, but after earning their first point on an Arcadia hitting error, the Crusaders answered with three in a row to tie the score at 4-4.  The first set saw two more ties at 5-all and 6-all, but Alvernia ran off four straight on Toni Maurer's (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) for an 11-6 lead and held on in the end for a 25-21 win.

The lead was 10-3 early in the second set for Alvernia which eventually recorded a 25-16 win.  Another big, early lead in the third set allowed the reserves to get some time in the rotation, but after the Knights tied the score at 21-all the Crusaders got kills from Newman, Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove), and Alyssa Soltis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) to end the match.

Alvernia will travel to Delaware Valley College this Saturday for a Middle Atlantic Conferences crossover where it will face the host Aggies and Wilkes University.
