Reading, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2011) - Penn State-Altoona (1-0) scored twice in the final eight minutes of play for a 2-0 win over host Alvernia University (1-1) Saturday afternoon in game two of the fourth annual Crusader Cup Women's Soccer Tournament at Schlager Memorial Field.
The first game of the day between Gwynedd-Mercy and Albright went 110 minutes without a goal and game two was headed that way into the final minutes. Altoona scored the first goal of the day in the 83rd minute when Nikki Supsic sent a pass across the box that Marlee Hibbs hit on a one-timer back to the far post past Alvernia keeper
Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township).
After nearly 200 minutes of scoreless soccer for the first of the day, the Lions needed less than 200 seconds to find the net again. This time a corner kick from Barcia Meredith found Allysia Ketchem who put Penn State up 2-0.
Alvernia totaled seven shots on the day--four coming from sophomore
Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area)--but couldn't better Lions' keeper Lindsay Raspanti.
With the win the Lions improve to 2-0 against the Crusaders having pulled out a 1-0 win in day two of the Crusader Cup a season ago.
Maher finished with four saves for the hosts and Raspanti had the same for the Lions.
Altoona will face Albright College at 11:00 Sunday morning. Alvernia will face Gwynedd-Mercy College at 2:00.
