Crusaders Drop A Pair At Kean Tournament

Union, N.J. (Oct. 13, 2012) - Alvernia University (9-13) opened the Kean University weekend women's volleyball tournament with a 3-0 loss to Muhlenberg College (13-8) and a 3-1 lost to NYU-Poly (8-19) Friday evening.

The Crusaders were led offensively in the first match by junior outside hitter Kristen Rupp (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) who totaled 10 kills.  Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) had 24 assists and Toni Maurer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) finished with seven digs.  Muhlenberg won tightly contested affairs in each of the three sets claiming and 25-22 win in the opener, taking the middle set 25-21, and winning the deciding set 25-18.

Alvernia came out and won the opening set of the match against NYU-Poly by a 25-23 score then dropped a 25-16 decision and a 25-20 set to fall behind 2-1.  NYU-Poly kept the Crusaders from leveling the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.  Sophomore Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) led teh way with 14 kills as three Crusaders reached double digits in kills in the second match.  Brittany Lantz (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) had 11 and Rupp finished with 10 for the second straight match.  Beck handed out all 42 assists for the Crusaders and Amy Dziura (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) led the defensive efforts with 14 digs.

Alvernia continues the Kean Tournament Saturday morning playing the host Cougars.
