Union, N.J. (Oct. 13, 2012) - Alvernia University (10-14) started the day with a 3-0 loss to Kean University (19-6) then bounced back with a 3-1 win over Manhattanville (8-19) to split the second day of the Kean University Women's Volleyball Tournament Saturday morning.
The Crusaders struggled to get into an offensive rhythm in the opener getting just 11 kills in the three-set match. They had just five kills in the first set the six total over the second and third against 22 hitting errors. The Cougars took the first set of the match 25-16 then went up 2-0 with a 25-17 win and closed the match with a 25-8 win.
Alvernia sophomore
Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) had six kills and junior
Kristen Rupp (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had four kills.
Toni Maurer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) led the way with 15 digs.
The Crusader hitters were much more effective in the second match getting 10 kills from
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) and nine from
Brittany Lantz (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot).
Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) finished the second match with 21 assists and three players reached double figures in digs led by
Amy Dziura (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) who had 13.
Newman was named to the All-Tournament Team. She totaled a team-best 31 kills and four blocks over the four matches.
Alvernia continues the season Wednesday at Arcadia.
