Glenside, Pa. (Oct. 17, 2012) - Alvernia University (7-6-3, 2-4) scored three goals in the second half then survieved a pair of strikes from Arcadia University (6-5-3, 3-3) in the last four minutes for an important 3-2 win Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Arcadia.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders got the opener from
Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) in the 53rd minute.
Joe Raymond (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) followed with a goal in the 59th minute--after assisting on the Martyn goal--then
Emir Guerrero (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) scored in the 74th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Alvernia keeper
Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made eight saves through the first 80 minutes to keep the Knights off the board, but the hosts broke through in the 87th minute when Nick Morris scored on a breakaway. Tim O'Leary added a second goal for Arcadia with 13 seconds left in regulation, but it was too little, too late.
Alvernia sophomore
Josh Wollaston (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) assisted on two goals for the Crusaders.
Alvernia moves within three points of the fifth and final playoff spot currently held by Arcadia. Alvernia is tied at 2-4 with Albright and Stevenson--two of the three teams left on the schedule. They will also face 0-6 Hood College in the final three games.
Alvernia will host Hood Saturday.
