BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2012) - Sophomore
Alex Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored a goal and older brother
Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) set up another as Alvernia University (9-6-3, 4-4) defeated Albright College (8-9-1, 2-5-1) 2-0 Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Shirk Stadium.
With the win the Crusaders move into a tie with Arcadia University for the fifth and final playoff spot in the conference. They would secure the spot--and could move up to fourth place--with a win over Stevenson on Saturday. A loss and the Crusaders would be out of the playoffs. With a tie they would need Arcadia to also lose or tie against Lebanon Valley to keep the fifth position.
In Tuesday's game at Albright the Crusaders held an 8-1 advantage in shots through the first half, but only put one on frame and it was saved by Lions' keeper Ryan Barr.
Alex Martyn then opened the scoring just over a minute into the second half converting a pass from sophomore
Joe Raymond (Media, Pa./Strath Haven). Neither team managed a shot over the next 18 minutes until
Kyle Martyn set up
Josh Wollaston (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) for the insurance goal in the 65th minute.
Albright finally generated some pressure late, but Alvernia keeper
Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made both of his saves in the final seven minutes to preserve his sixth shutout of the season.
The Crusaders travel to Stevenson for a 6:00 p.m. game on Saturday. The Commonwealth Championships begin next Tuesday with the 4-5 game for the right to travel to top seed Messiah on Thursday.
