Martyn Saves Crusaders With Late Goal

Crusaders Headed To Commonwealth Championships

BOX SCORE

Owings Mill, Md. (Oct. 27, 2012) - Senior Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored the game-winner with less than 30 seconds left in regulation as Alvernia University (10-6-3, 5-4) clinched a playoff spot with a 3-2 win over Stevenson University Saturday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Stevenson.

The Crusaders, finalists in last year's playoff, are headed back to the Commonwealth Championships and will be either the fourth or fifth seed pending results of Elizabethtown at Widener Saturday night.

Alvernia took a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game Saturday on a goal by Alex Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and the lead held until midway through the second half when Stevenson found the equalizer.  The Crusaders needed just four minutes to regain the lead with Kyle Martyn setting up Josh Wollaston (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) for the go-ahead goal.

Stevenson, also facing an outside shot at the playoffs, wouldn't go down without a fight finding the back of the net in the 84th minute to tie the game at 2-2.  Alvernia freshman Cody Shirk (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) hit Kyle Martyn with a pass from 30 yards out that Martyn settled and finished with 29 seconds left in regulation to give the Crusaders the win.

The time and location of Tuesday's game will be announced later.
