BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2012) - Commonwealth Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Josh Wollaston (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) scored the only goal of the game in the 27th minute and #4 Alvernia University (11-6-3) moved into the Commonwealth Semifinal Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win over #5 Arcadia University (8-7-2) at Schlager Memorial Field.
Sophomore
Alex Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) made a sliding effort at a pass across the top of the box and Wollaston blasted home his sixth goal of the year from 18 yards out (
HIGHLIGHT).
Alvernia controlled play for most of the first half ripping 12 shots to just three for Arcadia, but the Crusaders were only able to come up with the one goal. Freshman
Ricky Bruno (Reading, Pa./Exeter) had perhaps the best shot at a second goal, but his header was just off the mark in the 42nd minute. Arcadia goalie Ryan Lantzy made four of his eight saves in the first half.
Arcadia was able to drum up some pressure in the second half earning a point-blank chance in the 81st minute, but Alvernia keeper
Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) came up with what amounted to a fairly routine save on the shot by Alex Wells. Diller finished with six saves on the night--five of them in the second half--collecting his sixth shutout of the season.
Alvernia advances to face top-seeded Messiah College for the second straight year. The two teams met in the Commonwealth Final a season ago.
