Martyn Goal Gives Crusaders ECAC Title

BOX SCORE

Erie, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2012) - Tournament MVP Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored on a free kick with three minutes left in the second overtime to give fifth-seeded Alvernia University (14-7-3) a 2-1 win over #7 Marywood University (12-7-3) and the Crusaders first ECAC South Title Sunday afternoon at Penn State-Behrend.

Martyn struck a free kick from just outside the box and found the back of the net to start the celebration.

The Crusaders opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Joe Gingrich (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored his first goal of the season assisted by Martyn.  The Pacers leveled the match in the 53rd minute when Zachary Oyster collected a rebound off the crossbar and cashed it in.

Alvernia senior Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made two saves in the win.

The Crusaders picked up their first ECAC Title in their third appearance.  Sunday's game was a match-up of the two semifinal losers from a season ago.  Swarthmore won the 2011 title over Medaille.  Both those teams qualfied for the NCAA Championship this year.

#5 Alvernia 2, #7 Marywood 1 (2OT)
