Reading, Pa. (Nov. 8, 2012) - Sophomore Joe Raymond (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) scored on a header assisted by Alex Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) five minutes into overtime giving #5 Alvernia University (12-7-3) a 3-2 win over #4 PSU-Abington (12-5) Thursday evening in quarterfinal action of the ECAC South Region Men's Soccer Championships.

The Crusaders advance to the semifinal and will face top-seeded Penn State-Behrend on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  Behrend will be hosting the final four with #3 Lebanon Valley College playing #7 Marywood University in the other semifinal.

Alvernia jumped up 2-0 in Thursday's game on goals by Shawn Laskey (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest).  Laskey took in a high bounce off a corner play and chipped the ball over the PSU goalie to open the scoring in the 30th minute.  Martyn scored the first goal of the second half converting a penalty kick in the 55th minute.

Abington got on the board in the 66th minute on a goal by leading scorer Alex Martins assisted by Andre Lynahping.  The Alvernia lead was completely gone four minutes later when Julian Ward scored from 30 yards out that caught Crusaders' keeper Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) just far enough off the goal line.

The game took a major stoppage in the 72nd minute with three players getting cards after a scuffle including a red card for Abington's Dmitry Zherdev leaving the Lions down a man for the remainder of play.

Alvernia's best chance at the game-winner in regulation came in the 79th minute when Kyle Martyn had a point blank effort that James Carlin was able to deny.  Ricky Bruno (Reading, Pa./Exeter) also had a chance with three minutes left in regulation, but again Carlin made the save.

Alex Martyn got a feed from his brother Kyle midway thorugh the first overtime and he chipped a pass to Raymond who was able to skim the ball past Carlin and inside the far post.
