Crusaders Take Five-Setter At LBC

Newman Racks Up A Dozen Kills

Lancaster, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2012) - Alvernia University (4-5) was stretched to a fifth set in a 3-2 win over Lancaster Bible College (1-8) Thursday evening in non-conference volleyball action at LBC.

The teams alternated sets with Alvernia opening the match with a convincing 25-15 win in the opener.  LBC answered with a 25-21 win in the second set opening up a 16-12 lead midway through the set and keeping a working margin the rest of the way.

The Crusaders went back ahead 2-1 on the match with a 25-22 win in the third set.  Tied at 22-all LBC's Joanna Butala committed a service error that put the Crusaders ahead.  A pair of attack errors by the hosts over the last three serves gave Alvernia the set.

The Chargers ran off a 10-2 run in the fourth set to take a commanding 21-11 lead en route to a 25-13 win.  The final set was tilted toward the hosts at 12-9, but a kill from Brittany Lantz (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) pulled the Crusaders within two then Brittany Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) served for three straight points to put the Crusaders up 13-12.  LBC tied it at 13-all then a kill from Lantz and a bad set by the Chargers gave the Crusaders the match win.

Lantz finished with 11 kills and Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) had a team-high 12.  Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) had 30 assists and 23 digs and Toni Maurer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had a team-best 25 digs.

Alvernia is off until next Wednesday when it hosts Albright College for a Commonwealth Conference match.
