Alvernia Wins In Five Over Albright

Four Players In Double-Figure Kills

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2012) - Wednesday night the Alvernia University volleyball team (5-5, 2-1) defeated rival Albright (1-6, 0-4) in five sets.

Alvernia started off the match by winning the first set, 25-20, but in a back and forth second set Albright tied things up taking the set 25-23.

After the Crusaders won the third set, Albright came out and dominated the fourth set, 25-16, sending the match into a deciding fifth set.

In the fifth and final set, Alvernia won in a back and forth affair that ended with the Crusaders winning 16-14.  Alvernia had a 12-7 lead and all the momentum, but Albright came back to tie the set at 13-all.  The hosts went down the middle to Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) who burried her team-high 14th kill of the match, but the Lions scored with their backs to the wall to tie the score at 14-14.

Albright committed an attack error to put the Crusaders up 15-14 then sophomore Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) dropped in the winner for Alvernia.

Newman was one of four players to reach double-digits in kills for the Crusaders and junior libero Toni Maurer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had 24 digs and Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) had a season-high 46 assists.

Alvernia returns to action this Saturday at Immaculata University (1-8) at 11:00am.
