Crusaders Drop High-Scoring Affair To Dutchmen

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2012) - Senior Cate Cusack scored a game-high four goals to lead Lebanon Valley college (4-4, 1-0) to a 6-3 win over Alvernia University (3-5, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.

The Crusaders came out firing when senior Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) fired a shot at the Dutchmen goal that was deflected for a rebound goal off the stick of Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood).

Minutes later the Dutchmen answered back off a corner from Bridget Monighan.  LVC later threatened when they were awarded a penalty stroke that was stopped by Crusader goal keeper Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson).

Alvernia freshman Summer Liberto (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tied the contest at 2-2. She was able to redirect a rebound for her first career goal.

As the first half wound down, Cusack scored her first goal when she connected with a pass from Mandi Albright that put the Dutchmen up 3-2 at the break.

Cusack put her second goal in the cage and then Lauren Brumbach fired the ball between Wunsch's pads to give the Dutchmen a two goal advantage.

Guido and the Crusaders answered back when the senior forward lobbed an arching shot over the head of the Dutchmen net minder to pull within one goal, 4-3 with just under 27 minutes left to play.

The Crusaders took a time out to strategize a potential tying goal. Senior defender Erin Solley (Reading, Pa./Oley Valley) hit the post on a rebound and Peto had a shot saved on a great opportunity.

Cusack came back and put the game away scoring two goals in under two minutes to push the score to 6-3 favoring the Dutchmen.

Alvernia junior Taylor Eichelberger (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) made a fantastic defensive save when she sprinted to the cage and stopped the ball inches from the goal line moments before Cusack's third.

LVC tallied 22 shots and seven corners while Alverina had 15 shots and six corners. Wunsch tallied 12 saves but gave way to back up Courntey Daniels in the game's final three minutes.

Guido scored her team leading 5th and 6th goals of the year.

With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-5 on the year. They continue their season on Monday night when they take on Wilkes University at home.
