Alvernia Plays DeSales To A Rain-Soaked Draw

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2012) - Alvernia University (5-1-3) got goals from three different players in a 3-3 draw against DeSales University (5-2-2) Saturday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

The Crusaders scored three goals in the first half, including two in the last six minutes of the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break, but the Bulldogs came back with goals in the 50th and 66th minutes to knot the score at 3-all.  Both teams and the 200-plus fans in attendance took cover during a 30-minute rain dealy with just better than 13 minutes left in regulation.

After the worst of the rain passed the teams played the final 33 minutes with off and on rain, but neither could find a game-winner.  The Bulldogs had a header late in the first overtime that just missed the crossbar and Alvernia senior Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) had the best shot at a goal early in the second overtime, but his direct kick carrommed off the post.

Alvernia freshman Cody Shirk (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his second of the year assisted by Alex Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest).  DeSales' leading scorer Jonathan Balfour answered the Shirk goal with his seventh of the season 20 minutes later then Travis Foster (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) rammed in a header on a corner kick in the 40th minute and Michael Andrei (Reading, Pa./Exeter) finished a pass from Ricky Bruno (Reading, Pa./Exeter) in the 43rd minute to put the hosts up 3-1.

DeSales cut the gap to one goal four minutes into the second half when Steve Krause burried a shot off a scramble in front of the net, then tied the score on a Padraic Farrell goal with 24 minutes to play in regulation.

Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made seven saves for the hosts while Colin Sulpizio stopped four for the Bulldogs.

Alvernia returns to action Wednesday when it travels to King's College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
